זַרְזִירII m. (Syr. זרזירא P. Sm. 1156, Ar. zurzur; prob. fr. זור to circle) starling, also (collect.) flock of starlings. Ḥull.62a להביא את הז׳ (Sifra Shmini, Par. 3, ch. V חזַרְזִירִים, Ar. רין …) to include the starling (in the genus raven). Ḥull. l. c.; B. Kam.92b (prov.) לא לחנם הלך ז׳וכ׳ not without cause does the starling follow the raven ; Gen. R. s. 65, beg. Ib. עלה ז׳ אחדוכ׳ a flock of starlings came to Palestine.Pl. זַרְזִירִים, זַרְזִירִין. Ib. s. 75 אין שני ז׳וכ׳ two flocks of starlings cannot sleep on one board (two nations cannot rule at the same time). Tosef.Ḥull.III (IV), 23.
